TAUT VOLUMES

“Coherent and brilliant” – is how the jury of the international competition to design the Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts [MUDAC] and the Musée de l’Elysée Photography Museum, in Lausanne, described the entry from design studio Aires Mateus & Associados, adding that the plan from the Portuguese architects “convinced through its strength, clarity and simplicity”, before unanimously deeming it the winner.

Graphically described by the architects themselves as “one museum, two museums, one space”, the project by Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus is developed as a single exterior shell, inside of which its two functions develop.

Sharing the same building and the same foyer, which extends outdoors, forming a natural extension to the public esplanade and open on all four sides, the pair of museums meets the requirements imposed on them – the Mudac, located on the first floor, with its ceiling as a huge space of light, outlines the roof; the Musée de l’Elysée, located on the lower ground floor, with light controlled so as not to damage its collection, defines the flooring.
