THE DESIGN BROTHERS

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec were born in the French commune of Quimper in 1971 and 1976, respectively, and studied at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Cergy-Pontoise. In 1999, the Bouroullec brothers began working together and created the brand Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. Today, they are one of the world`s greatest references in contemporary design. Highly recognized for their work in planning and organizing interior spaces, the brothers have collaborated with brands such as Vitra or Samsung, continuing to strengthen all the partnerships they establish with small producers. They work with the same enthusiasm and devotion on all projects and try to make their creations timeless and memorable at all times.

You are brothers, but you are both different, naturally. In terms of personality and a creative level. How are these differences reflected in your work?

On one hand, we are brothers who grew up together with the same background and the same relationship with shape and colour. We have a common understanding about more general things. There is a difference of five years between us. We have quite different points of view. We have a really high level of understanding of each other but still disagree sometimes. We dialog a lot, and at the end what is important is that we find a common point of view, a solution that satisfies both of us. When we disagree, we do everything to find an agreement.
On the other hand, some projects belong more to one than the other. There is no a priori work division. It depends on the project, the moment and the context. We both think, we both draw, we both follow each step of each project.

What is the strength of your creative process? It can be measured in time?

There is no set formula. Each project suggests a different approach. Some ideas may come very quickly and spontaneously. Others need much thought, and the process is longer. There is no secret. Then come the drawings, the models and 3D approach. Some projects begin only with a drawing. Some others begin with scale models. There is no rule in the order since the steps dialog together. We go back and forward on each moment of the process.
