KAAN Architecten in Sao Paulo

The architecture studio KAAN Architecten, based in Rotterdam and Sao Paulo, opened its second office in the Brazilian city and presented their new project for São José dos Campos’ Faculty of Medicine. Founded by architects Kees Kaan, Vincent Panhuysen and Dikkie Scipio in 2014, the studio reveals a strong connection with Brazilian modernist architecture, especially for the use in many of its projects, raw concrete, clean lines and functional forms. Mainly dedicated to urban planning, renovation projects and educational programs between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian branch’s team is led by Renata Gilio and already has a number of important projects such as the City Hall Park and the Paço Building.
At the official launch of the new office KAAN Architecten revealed the design for the new Faculty of Medicine of the Universidade Anhembi Morumbi (UAM) in São José dos Campos, a city in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. Optimizing the topographical characteristics of the region, the building stands on an elevated plot, which both isolates and turns the construction into a new urban landmark. To work around the problem of intense solar radiation, the architects proposed using a system of vertical slabs that allows for shade in every facade. Each concrete slab is alternating with glass, which places the building in permanent contact with the outside. The project should be completed at the end of 2017.
