The Arch House

A window to the world.

Writing about the city of Ílhavo without referring Vista Alegre Factory is almost impossible: it is the guardian of the most charismatic and international porcelain in the country and it was in it that Maria João Fradinho was inspired to build her home and place of work. The founder of FRARI atelier sought references in industrial architecture in order to materialize her house as a uniform body, covered by metallic materials, and where the inside was independent of its exterior shell. Through a set of volumes, the Arch House was built as a true window to the world.

Although it jumps to sight among the urban network of Estrada das Oliveiras, it follows the requirements of the neighbouring buildings, with the facade guaranteeing the alignment with the consolidated pre-existence. Nevertheless, for the architect Maria João Fradinho, it was important to certify the transition from a public space to a private domain and ensure adequate privacy in the inside, even though she wished to achieve maximum exposur possible.
