THE LIGHT`S POWER OF ATTRACTION

9:00 a.m. We arranged our meeting for 9am on a sunny Wednesday. Jakob Kvist arrived almost at the scheduled time, sliding through the streets of Copenhagen on his bicycle. Serene and talkative, he took us on a brief tour of his career and described the light, which attracts and involves him. An artist or lighting designer, there is a thin line separating the two levels and in the middle of both Jakob accepts he is more concerned about how light affects people and not as much as how people affect light. In a conversation that literally flowed to the sound of the bicycle’s wheels, we learned that, for Jakob, colours and context play a major role in the universe of lighting.

You have started in a more technical area. How was the beginning?

Yes. I actually started from the bottom, in another field of lighting design.  I started more as a lighting technician. I was doing heavy work in stages, nightclubs, I was doing the lights there, and I slowly moved towards theatre and began to do some lighting design for musicians, for bands. From there I experienced a more expressive and architectural approach and I started doing installations not for musicians but with musicians.

Do you think it was a good start? Or you would have preferred to start in a different place?

You know, the grass is always greener on the other side. I’m kind of grateful that I did it but I think that there are easier paths to do what I did. On the other hand, I also got so much technical knowledge out of it and in the field that I am walking in today it’s kind of unique that I have this background instead maybe an architectural background or artistic background. Then, on the other hand, I have a more technical approach, which also can be the upper hand. There are pros and cons. History will judge (laughs). The most important thing is that I can work interdisciplinary. I can work with architecture, I can work with music, with art installations and I can combine them.
