THE ARCHITECTURE IN THE SERVICE OF SPORTS
Viana do Castelo is a geographically privileged city with gorgeous landscapes. But not only: due to the important names of contemporary Portuguese architecture that have signed its spaces and buildings, the Alto Minho’s capital is also named the "Mecca of Architecture". The most recent building is an equipment for sports and the community: Pavilhão do Atlântico was designed by Valdemar Coutinho Arquitetos and had a low municipal budget, besides the aim to achieve a functional organization. Thus, a unique volume defined by dynamic and sober lines was designed, without losing the connection to the ocean. This is can be noticed on the grey of concrete finishes, the stapled grey-blue stone and in the tile panels with allusions to the beaches of Viana. The Pavilhão has already won three major awards: it was honoured with the Best Public Architecture Project (Prémio Construir 2018), won the 2018 Urban Design & Architecture Design Awards in the Sports & Recreation category and was awarded the 2018 MasterPrize Architecture Award in the Recreational Architecture category, in Los Angeles.
