TALKS ABOUT ARCHITECTURE

It was born as an experimental studio, in 1990, by the hand of Paulo Martins Barata, João Luís Ferreira, Paulo Perloiro, Pedro Appleton and João Perloiro and, today, PROMONTORIO keeps assuming itself just the same in the way of approaching projects, clients and other entities. It is an engagement that looms with the same optimism and enthusiasm as it did the first time. And each project is, indeed, unique, because it is always understood as a new opportunity. In a time of great production, with the recent edition of “Architecture of Leisure”, which gathers some of PROMONTORIO’s most relevant projects in hospitality and interiors design, Paulo Martins Barata and João Luís Ferreira were the open door to the discovery of an office that presents itself with integrity in the different areas it works on. Whole in its ideas, whole in the freshness with which questions itself on a daily basis. Whole because it knows with honesty that “nothing is truly ours”. We let the talk flow.

What is, then, architecture?

Paulo Martins Barata
I think I identify myself more with the German way, which talks of the art of building, because I believe it doesn’t close the idea of architecture to its artistic content, but as a discipline it is not art, it is Baukunst. Unlike the French, who see it much more as part of the Beaux-Artssystem.

João Luís Ferreira
It is much harder to define what art is nowadays. That is the first difficulty. Architecture brings us a whole experience. The architectural object it is a thing that can be smelled, heard, seen, touched, that gives us different materials, its combination. Architecture ends up producing not only an image inside which we see, imagine and reflect ourselves, as we live inside it. We can’t stop living in the middle of architecture. Paulo as already built a house to himself, I have never built one to myself. I can be an architect, know exactly what architecture should be, but I have always lived among architectures made by others. It doesn’t mean I won’t add, with what I make for others, some progress. Architecture is a very fruitful experience, complete. It is an experience where all the other arts are, in a certain way, reflected. While in music we have an almost immediate relation, it is an abstraction, but is almost immediate, we have an emotion associated, in architecture it is a more mediated experience: The building or the square are mediated, they create a relation that takes a little while longer and then is about the experience of things we have. There are a lot of things we like only because we have a memory of them.

Paulo Martins Barata
Did you say architecture is abstract?

João Luís Ferreira
It is abstract.

Paulo Martins Barata
I don’t see architecture as abstract.
