THE DIAMOND OF ZAHA HADID

The new building at the Antwerp port took seven years to build. The necessary time frame for the architectural offices of Zaha Hadid to build such a structure which renovates and amplifies the old abandoned fire station building. The project, which is capable of currently gathering 500 Port employees who previously worked in separate buildings, is based on three essential pillars: sustainability, historical research and the importance of creating construction work that in itself if the face of the project, without any particular front.
The Antwerp Port is the second largest harbour in all of Europe, with 15 km of platform, serving every year 15,000 commercial ships and another 60,000 boats. There are 200 million tons of merchandise transported by transoceanic ships that guaranty jobs for over 60,000 people, including 8,000 dockworkers.
The project, with the design of Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher, is, this way, a work for the future that guarantees a sustainable work environment. The terrain, for example, assured diverse sustainable aspects with construction materials and components delivered by way of water, thus, fulfilling the ecological objectives of the port. With support from the Origin offices a profound analysis of the location and existing building was possible. The preservation of the old fire station was essential. From this sprung a new form inspired on the prow of the ship which is similar to the morphology of a diamond.
