JOANA VASCONCELOS AND VHILS TOGETHER IN THE BIGGEST ART PROJECT

As a truly tribute to renewable energy, the WindArt project celebrates the construction of Douro Sul Wind Farm, as one of Europe’s largest. Located in Serra de Leomil, county of the Portuguese village of Moimenta da Beira, the project aims to explore the integration of the wind towers in the landscape. Joana Vasconcelos and Vhils were the guest artists to sign the world’s tallest contemporary art project. Both artists projected and drew the elements that cover two wind towers, approximately 100m tall and 50m wingspan (blade), totaling 150m. The project scale was one of the differentiating factors of the intervention and forced the artists to a detailed study of the conditions and alternatives throughout the creative process. Joana Vasconcelos talks about the WindArt as “a very particular project” and a real challenge. The two artists used high-strength vinyl that helped in the final result. “Suddenly we found a different solution, which was very interesting and very practical and actually improved my drawing,” admits the artist.
The official presentation of the project took place at the top of Padrão dos Descobrimentos, where guests were able to travel to Moimenta da Beira and go height the two turbines, through a 3D experience.
